Specifically, FIABCI today enjoys Non-Governmental Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Committee (ECOSOC). ECOSOC serves as a central forum for discussing international economic and social issues and formulating recommendations. FIABCI participates with the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements (Habitat) to find solutions to the housing problems of the modern world. The United Nations has a unique role to play in helping solve what former Secretary-General Kofi Annan defined as “Problems without Passports.” FIABCI is the global advocate for advancing human settlements and the driving force for environmentally sound and sustainable development. Neither of these goals can be reached without a sharp focus on the importance of Property Rights. Working with the initiatives established by the High Level Commission on Legal Empowerment of the Poor, FIABCI is an active member of the United Nations Real Estate Advisory Group. Through the non-governmental status that FIABCI holds within the United Nations Department of Public Information, delegates promote UN sessions and events internationally. In addition, FIABCIcontributes to the annual UN-DPI Conference each September.

The United Nations Habitat Commission has recognised FIABCI's work by awarding the Vice President, E. Renè Frank, the Scroll of Honor. FIABCI members actively participate with specific sessions and by promoting dialogue between the different members in each World Urban Forum.
